The truth about marseille mcables models
I hear many many many reports that the general feeling on the Gaming Edtion is this...
It is nothing more than a DSP based "2xAi/SuperEagle" visual filter that you commonly see in emulator video shader/filter options... "PUT INSIDE A HDMI CABLE". The "OIL PAINTED" look that people report supports this idea... It is nothing more than OVERLY agreesive "Edge Restoration and Edge Detection shaders". The settings they have programmed in the DSP/EPROM are too agressive and not calibrated for balance at ALL... These settings on the Gaming Edtion will smear and make the image to "blotchy/rounded". This is the "Antialiasing" they are claiming...
Truth is... That is a lie... It is an old video scaler technique called... EDGE Restoration/Repair/Detection.
The GAMING Edtion also completely removed the previous genration cable's sharpening filter too! This is commonly called "EDGE Enhancement". By removing the EDGE Enhancement, and cranking up the values for the EDGE Restoration/Detection... They "MADE/TWEAKED" the current Gaming Cable they sell... Really all they have done is disabled the Edge Enhancement Sharpening. The older ULTRA's EDGE Enhancement/sharpening looked great... NOW they have over configured the NEWER cable models to use "FORCED/Exagerated" EDGE Restoration/Detection settings... This is why the majority of people say only OLDER games in SD/480p resolutions look "better".
For the videophiles & PC owners this cable is useless. You are better off researching RESHADE/SWEETFX hardware GPU shaders and using those within your applications/games/emulators... This may have a slightly better use on the older console games that run in poor sub-resolutons like 720p. The truth is this... The Gaming Cable is not really doing much at all... It UPSCALES... Just like the old generation MCables... You can buy those for $30 now... The new MCable is NOT worth $120-150... This is a simple BASIC/UPSCALER... That is why things look so much better... 480p-1080p DOES make a difference... That is the case on any scaler... My DVDO Edge can make 480p Halo 2 looks amazing at 1080p. The magic in the cable is from that UPSCALING...
The EDGE Detection/Restoration are kind of overly forced in the GAMING Edition cable, you have no choice in how aggressive it is... They marketed it as a GAMING only cable... However... They really just overly tweaked it wayyyy too much... I think the Cinema Edition is the best "CURRENT MCable" if you want a very SUBTLE Edge Restoration/Detection flavored image... This would be a " VERY SLIGHT Watercolor/Oil Painted" Effect... You will like the CINEMA Edtion if you like the SUBTLE image filters you can apply in emulators... Like lower amounts of the filter forced on the image.
If you perfer having the EDGE Resroration/Detection/Enhancement settings configured for the most balanced image... You should get the older gneration ones. The ULTRA was the best compromise... They programmed increased levels for those that wanted more EDGE Restoration/Detection "Antialising" + They tweaked and managed a good setting for the EDGE Enhancement/Sharpening... The ULTRA is the BEST of all the cables from a BALANCED standpoint... They simply took the ULTRA... Waited a year... Decided to make 2 MODELS and force the consumer to choose "supposedly" BETTER cables for thier uses... Rather than just keep making a cable that just WORKED and made any image in general look better for a universal array of content... Games/Movies/TV etc...
I guess the Gaming one is fine for those that want that "PLASTIC" look... Most of us want a clean and sharp image with BALANCED tweaks/enhancements... We do not want the kind that cripple and sabatoage the careful work we tweakers do on our other gear/scalers/TV settings/PC shaders/Re-Shade values/etc...
From what I have gathered... You guys just need to know what you want... I think the 2 best MCables are the CURRENT Cinema model and the older ULTRA with the silver M in the design... Truth be said... The ULTRA was about as good as it got... I can find reports of people stating how the ULTRA was doing antialising on thier games back then too... This was before the GAMING Edtion was released... So yeah... That is the rundown... It is a lot of marketing and "odd" decesions in engineering and designing... Who here wished they would just let us FLASH our own USB firmware on these cables!? Let US pick the settings!
Just remember things are not always what they seem... The physcology with these cables is speculative... Bottom line is this... I really looked deep and even cut open my own cables to find the truth... I swear to you guys... What I am saying is true... The whitepapers on the VTV-12XX chips mention thier so called "Contexual Antialsing" BUT! They call it Contexual EDGE Restoration/Detection... So yeah... They have made not new improvements... All they are doing is screwing with the video processor/scalers settings with each "NEW" cable... Sometimes the EPROM settings/silder is programmed to be at "4" and other times they set it too low/not high enough/off etc... Sometimes they jack it up to "10".
If you are considering buying the MCable... Just try the older ones first and save that money for researching what model may be BEST for you... Truth is... Every MCable is the same... The only difference is the faulty chips they randomly use in ALL generations... No way to escape that... They recycle and reuse the same chipset/die... Even the defective ones that overheat and have "glitches". Just be aware guys... I spoke with them for 2 weeks and they really KNOW what they are doing... They have molded a business off of this model... It sucks!?
