State of USB-C monitor cables?

Audio/Visual Club - Ars Technica OpenForum - arstechnica.com
I'm relatively new to the USB-C world, but in the short time that I've been here I've grown to hate/fear USB-C to DisplayPort adapters. I'm using them just because that's what's lying around at work, but having lots of issues. What should I be doing? Are cables with USB-C on one side and DisplayPort on the other more reliable? Are they as reliable as a vanilla DP-to-DP cable? My understanding of how this all should work is that the USB-C port should just switch to "alternate" mode or some such thing and it's a passive adaption from USB-C pinout to DP. But these adapters are all bulky and look like they're doing more than that.
