Small business - opinions on...
My wife and I own and operate a small cleaning business here in San Antonio, TX. Right now we have an agreement to clean breezeways and do make-ready cleanings for a nearby apartment complex. Overall it's not a bad gig. Profits are decent and the work really isn't bad. As an owner my concern is being able to cover costs and pay employees. Right now we are still waiting on a few payments from December and all of January. This totals nearly $3,000 in owed payments. We do breezeways at the beginning and middle of the month. We're supposed to be doing the beginning of the month cleanings right now (been delayed due to weather conditions) but I'm considering holding off on doing any more work until we see some payment. I sent invoices in December and again in mid January and we haven't seen a check that covers all that is owed. They send checks 2x a month and I try to send invoices the same day the work is done to make sure things are timely and to reduce payment lag.
Given that we've seen only one payment ($178 out of nearly $3,000 of work billed) should I order a halt on further work or trudge onward? Right now I'm paying employees out of my own pay from my full-time job but it's putting my family in a bad way.
