Recommendations on components for a HTPC/NAS box

Home Theater Computers - www.avsforum.com
Hello,

Long time dreamer, first time builder here. I want to put together an HTPC that fits into my AV cabinet. I would like to get your opinions/recommendations about my build. I will ask a separate question about the video card/tuner solution. Anyway, here are my requirements:

- Space for the machine is about 17"wide x 12" deep and 4" tall. That gives me 1-2" on top and 2" in back for clearance. There is a fan in the space for exhaust.

- I want the machine to be absolutely silent. No fans. *Maybe* a CPU fan (decision dictated by cost/benefit).

- The machine will be my home NAS, so I need space for backup files.

- The machine will run Linux, so this may color my choices of e.g. video solutions (but I post here for a wider audience and most of the tech should be OS-agnostic).

- At most 35W TDP. I love the A12-9800E and am looking for plenty of oomph too.

I have two competing builds. The first one should be more plug-and-play, and is totally designed for passive cooling. It's also more expandable, as it's micro-ATX. Other questions I have:

- If I go mini-ITX, will I miss the expandability? What thing of importance am I giving up that I'm not aware of?

Here's my build:

- AB350m Pro 4 motherboard

- A12-9800E processor

- 160W DC-DC Power Supply (one of those little ones that fit right into the ATX socket)

- DDR4-2400 Memory Ballistix Sport LT 8GB (2 x 4GB)

m.2 boot/OS drive Do I want a M.2 NVME 2280, such as a Crucial MX300 M.2 2280 275GB SATA III 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT275MX300SSD4 ?

- Drive 4TB media drive

- Case Streacom FC9/FC10 FC10: 435 x 319 x 100mm == 17 x 12.5 x 3.94 inches

- FC9: 348 x 289 x 100mm == 13.7 x 11.38 x 3.94 inches

- Optical Streacom OB3 Blu-Ray writer

- (not sure it's worth it getting the blu-ray writer...)

- Slot-load LG DVD instead
