Need some help cutting the cord!
Comcast bumped up the cost of my plan up again, so I’m going to switch to a streaming service and also pick up a new device. I’ve tried comparing all the options, but I’m worried I’ve overlooked something so was hoping from some insight from users. My main priorities are:
--Live TV, to include major network stations
--Sports (need live NBCSN, FS1, ESPN, etc.)
--Random channels the family watches (which I think are mostly covered)
--Pause, rewind, etc., for live TV
I think that I have it down to either PS Vue (basic package of $45/month) or Hulu Live ($40). I think I am considered in the DC metro region, so I should have network access on both.
Both seem to have the sports and other channels I need.
Can both pause, etc., for live TV? If I pause to let live TV get ahead, can I then FF through the commercials?
Is Vue unlimited, but automatically removes something after 28 days? Any way to mark something so it doesn’t get deleted? Of course, this isn’t typical but happens. Do you have full rewind and FF options with Vue DVR? How about with Live TV?
I was a bit confused by what Hulu lists as abilities to FF and rewind while watching TV and/or DVR. I plan on starting with just the 50 hour package to avoid any extra costs. Can anyone confirm what you can do? Do I really have to watch commercials while watching DVR?
On to the device! Mainly looking for something that is user friendly for the family and has good performance. I want to connect via Ethernet to get the best streaming speeds. I also want to play lots of file formats (AVI, MKV, etc.) for movies that I…bought…off the internet…I think my main options are:
Roku Ultra: good price but I’ve read mixed reviews about its performance. Any one use one? Would you recommend it?
Apple TV: my computer and our phones are Apple, if that matters. The price is putting me off, but I might be able to swing it. Is the 4K a big step up from the 4th gen? My TV is the Sony XBR55X810C which is 4K Ultra HDTV. Will everything I stream be 4K or UHD? Or is it limited and I won’t see the benefits? Also, can I just dump all my video files into iTunes and stream them?
Fire TV that’s coming out later this year: I’ve read that the Amazon Fires really push Amazon stuff, and all the other apps are buried a bit, which sounds annoying. Also don’t need Alexa.
Sorry this got so long! I just dread getting all set up with a new system and then realize I overlooked something. Comcast sucks, but at least it’s mostly plug and play and my kids know how to work On Demand. Thanks for all the help!
