In my thread "It is too cold to snow", the fact that snowflakes are hexagonal promoted some interesting posts.
Werebo mentioned honeycomb, which the bees form into perfect hexagons with equal sides. This is a miraculous coincidence. Or is it a coincidence ? Somehow the bees select a hexagon for specific reasons and it is not by accident, it is by evolution and incredible intelligence for an insect.
Only 3 geometric shapes with equal sides can fit together on a flat surface without leaving any gaps - equalateral triangles, squares and hexagons. The most compact combination are hexagons and our little bee found it.
Hexagons dominate nature in countless cases.
