Mass Media Storage / Server
Hoping to get some advice and discussion on digital media storage.
I am referring to it as mass media storage as the term server to me seams clouded with its use by media server software like plex and emby.... hope this isn't confusing.
I'm not an IT person..... just a hoarder of media
Hardware that I have or is in transit
NORCO RPC-4308 4U Rackmount Short Depth 15.25" 4U Rackmount Case with Eight Hot Swap Trays
board SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCL-F-O LGA 1155 with Xeon quad core + 16GB ECC RAM (screaming deal from my IT guy)
Supply Corsair Certified RMi Series RM650i 650W 80 Plus Gold Full Modular Power Supply (CP-9020081-NA/RF) Refibished but a darn good price and good reviews
AOC-SAS2LP-MV8 PCI-Express 2.0 x8 SATA / SAS 8-Port Controller Card
4x Hitachi 3Tb drives (used from my IT guy....also at a great price)... I also have 2 x 4TB drives currently full of data
This is where all the options is starting to make me crazy..... I have been trying to read a lot on the topic but am at the point of overwhelmed.
Then there's all the discussions on:
drive failures vs
drive space vs
Each option seams to have its own set of issues or limitations.
Software and solutions that I have done some reading on:
Windows Storage Spaces
Desires in the setup (from what I can figure):
1) store ~20TB of data. This is a rough number that I have in my head given the # of disks still to rip. Contemplating compression of older movies.... different topic easy of use
2) easy of use
3) "serve" up Plex
4) in an ideal world the rack mounted unit would also be able to run REW, Plex Media Player and other windows based software..... I know some think I am crazy on this
What are others having success with
Why do you do what you do for storage
Pros/cons of different solutions
Sorry that this got so long..... I will post a couple of my thoughts later
