Looks like my radeon HD 7970 died - what to replace it with?

Audio/Visual Club - Ars Technica OpenForum - arstechnica.com
Came home, woke up my computer, no video. rebooted, beep codes indicate no VGA. reseated everything, no luck. Taking it into work tomorrow to confirm (and probably bringing home my 6950 for a while).

What's comparable to or better than the 7970? It looks like the r9 280x is similar, as is the 285 (minus a third of the ram). I have no idea what the equivalent would be in nvidia's gibberish naming scheme.

I'd been thinking about upgrading next year, once new parts come out... guess I can't wait that long.

I run at 2560x1600. performance was acceptable. I'd prefer to stay under $300, but will go over if it's justified. Paid $360 for this one, used, in june 2012.
