is the hdd dead or fixable?

Storage Forum - www.tomshardware.co.uk
so I got this asus x66ic and when I try to start-up I get the message ''missing operating system'', I've tried switching the bios boot priority w/o any luck. since the cd player died a while ago I've put windows 7 on this usb but still it wont give the message ''press key to load from'' yet it does so on other pc's. when I take out the hdd and put it on my desktop I get the same message on my desktop saying missing os. (I don't have another laptop hdd so I can't switch hdd's in the laptop, only use the hdd from the laptop to put on a desktop) but when I use the usb w/o the hdd in the laptop I can boot from usb. does this mean my hdd is completely broken and can be thrown in the trashbin? or is it still fixable.

eagerly waiting some ones respond
