Gaming Computer as NAS?
Hi Guys i have a few questions, my Synology NAS is no longer working its running in 100Mb/s rather than 1000 which has caused me alot of frustration. It used to work under the full speed but after much troubleshooting i think there is something internally wrong with it. At any rate i've switched to using my desktop PC and windows media player for streaming UPNP to my other sources. Basically what i have done in the past was store everything on my computer and mirror the drive on the NAS to serve as a backup and to stream to my TV's in the house and network attached stereos.
I dont like running my PC unless im either using it or playing a game, i pretty much just set it sleep to save power. Obviously it would need to be turned on if i were to stream something off it.
Given the price of a new NAS i have some old hardware lying around and im wondering if its worth it to do a NAS build or should i just continue using my PC? I can always get an external hard drive to run as a mirror in the computer.
Specs on the build i want to do:
Core 2 Duo 6300
512MB DDR2 Ram x4
Need to purchase a case and power supply
not sure what software i want to install on the computer if i did build it but ideally i would want something i can remotely control and that would shutdown to save power until i need it. Maybe a wake on LAN Setting? In that same light though would it not be easier to configure a wake on LAN setting for my desktop/gaming rig and just use that for the streaming? '); }
