1Gbps plan is overkill for most household usage?

Internet Bandwidth & Networking Clinic - www.hardwarezone.com.sg - forums.hardwarezone.com.sg
pls help me to understand what's the point of having a 1Gbps plan and why are these plans so popular? it doesnt seem practical since most of our connections with normal usage never hit that speed as it connects to overseas servers, unless u're doing a test using speedtest.net

i just did a number of speed tests on a 1Gbps plan i'm on using multi-thread (12 of them) downloading of ISO files, speedof.me and testmy.net and the download results range from 5.35 - 140Mbps.

and that's just 1 person on the connection. correct me if im wrong, but i dont think if another 4 ppl is on this fibre optic connection at the same time, they will all get 140Mbps each.
