Server Noob -- First NAS Setup for Backup / ShareDrive / Maybe VideoStream

Servers - www.overclock.net
Hey all,

So I'm a complete newbie when it comes to server-side stuff.

I currently have a need to do scheduled backups from 4 machines at home and want to be able to store photos (thousands, not mine) that can be accessed at will.

I am not sure what kind of a setup I need for this, so I am not quite sure what I should be looking at:

Maybe a NAS box like this?

- QNAP TS-251 2-Drive Bays - $300

- And two of these (for RAID 1) when they go on sale: Western Digital Red 4TB 5400RPM NAS Drives - ~$120 each

My other option is to of course build my own server, which I know would mean more flexibility, but I realize that would increase set up complication and possibly cost.

I don't need something super fancy (aka $1200 Server build with 32 TB of storage and 32 Gigs of RAM), and am looking to keep the cost to around $500. The lower the cost, the better.

I would like to possibly set up a PLEX server off of it (I don't really know yet what that entails / requires) for watching videos and such, but it's not completely necessary. I figure if I want to go that route, I will need a lot more RAM than a one-stop box like the QNAP has inside (though I know it has upgradeable slots).

Any ideas, suggestions, advice from you experts? =D
