Echo Dot vs a Bluetooth 'speaker'?

Macintoshian Achaia - Ars Technica OpenForum - arstechnica.com
I've started using my MBA in closed-mode with exterior screen (been dual-screening before). And I can't hear a damn thing because the MBA is closed. So I was like, 'ok, get a cheap iHome speaker for $30-$50'. But for that money, it's now possible to get an IoT device like Echo Dot or Google Home Mini.

What would you guys go for, either recommend a BT speaker or Amazon or Google, etc IoT speaker?

Thanks.

tangent, but where the heck is Apple on this tech... $350 for the HomePod is ridiculous. They couldn't make a $50 version...
