MacBook Air? Too outdated vs MacBook or MacBook Pro?

Macintoshian Achaia - Ars Technica OpenForum - arstechnica.com
I'm going to buy my 14 year old granddaughter a new Mac laptop tomorrow (birthday present) for use in high school starting next year.

The MacBook Air with 1.8 GHz i5, 256GB SSD ($1200), and plenty of compatible/useful ports, seems like the best choice sitting between a MacBook ($1300) with a smaller 12" screen, poor keyboard, one port, and slow 1.2 GHz m3, and a MacBook Pro ($1300) with too small 128 GB SSD, only 2 not very compatible ports, and slightly heavier to carry around.

But is the MacBook Air with its older generation uP, non-retina screen, and probably headed toward extinction (no new model this year) really a good choice anymore? I'd like this purchase to last through 4 years of high school for my granddaughter.

Advice?
