For sale: Nikon AF D 80-200 F2.8D ED 2 ring version.
I just upgraded to a near new, used Tamron 70-200 vc version 1 today, at a great price too. So, I am selling this Nikon AF D 2.8 80-200. Is a legendary lens came out around 15 years ago and Nikon is still making it new today. All metal constructions and it is built like a tank, literally. I love this lens and it does what is supposed to do.
I will spare you googling about the lens. The lens has a well documented known flaw. The lens would experience AF back focusing at 135 to 200mm when the focusing distance is around 10ft to the macro distance 6ft/5th. Some copies would back focus at the longest end under 25ft too. Stopping down won't do anything. However, using liveivew to focus or manual focusing would produce sharp photo at f2.8. This happens with more recent DSLRs. My copy DID experience the same problems until I physically recalibrate the front lens element group...by rotating it away from the sensor. The process took me days to get it right.
Right now, the lens requires no AF tuning at all, after physically realigning my D7000 AF array module (this involves with opening up the D7000 bottom plate and to adjust the 3 screws aligning the AF module). Again, it is another tedious process. Before I did that to my D7000, I was using -19 for the lens. It works well. Right now, is ZERO.
What is happening now is that the lens does not back focus AT ALL even at the macro distance around 6ft to 5th. But at wide open, the shot isn't usable because of the lower CA and ghosting. By f3.5. Is sharp. By F4, all the ghosting and low level CA is gone. This isn't a problem for me since I got the lens to shoot cycling race photography, not macros. I am talking about shooting the lens at 155mm to 200mm under 7ft. If you keep your focal length around 135mm, you get tack sharp images at f2.8, up to macro distance. As long as the shooting distance is beyond 10ft to 12ft, tack sharp wide open under all focal lengths.
