Camera Suggestions Wanted

Audio/Visual Club - Ars Technica OpenForum - arstechnica.com
My son is going to be canoeing at Northern Tier this summer with his Scout Troop for 7 days. While the leaders will have their own (more powerful) cameras, I would like him to have something he can use to take his own pictures and keep his own memories of the trek. So, here's my thoughts on the requirements:

- Compact or very small and light

- point and shoot

- waterproof or inexpensive case

- runs on normal batteries (AA or AAA) (7 days in the woods)

- holds ~1000 pictures (or can with a 64GB card) No replacing the card on the trail

- short videos

- quick startup

- inexpensive (sub $150)

- Mostly daytime, wildlife shots

They're not allowed to take their phones on trips in his Troop nor would his phone last for the entire week, so a dedicated camera would be good. In addition to the trip, we're going to Alaska in early summer so something he can use to document hat would be great. Most of the same rules would apply.
