Files on SSD drive

Computers Forum - PCs, laptops, hardware, software - City-Data Forum - www.city-data.com
I recently bought a new small notebook and the only drive is a SSD (not EMMC)

I do plan to back up files but understand SSDs tend to eventually fail without warning unlike HDDs which usually give you warning, particularly if you keep an eye on SMART parameters and it has to do with read write cycles.

Would it be wise to put working files on an external flash drive or just not worry about it? either way I would have two other backups for important files.

Right now I am typing on a heavily used 2009 laptop but I have maintained it, kept it clean and cool, and it still works pretty well........just limited in capabilities ..though not an issue for basic operations....though once I have everything transferred over, I plan to put linux on the old one and see how long it can be functional.

I have no interest right now in cloud computing.
