White / Black Levels Question

Home Theater Computers - www.avsforum.com
I just downloaded the Home Theater Demonstration Bluray v 2.0 that was made by guys around here, and I am playing it back on my HTPC.

Playing back the video tests that show white and black levels, VLC media player plays back those tests as intended. The white goes to ideal white, and none of the invisible (+1% - +7%) shapes are visible. The picture during clip 88 (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) looks very dark, but the colors pop.

Playing the same file with MPC-HC, the "invisible" shapes are clearly visible all the time. On clip 88, colors look washed out and black is more of a dark grey. This setting does look more like what I saw in the theater with this movie, though.

1- Why is this happening?

2- Which is the more accurate way to view movies/ other content?

3- VLC looks too dark, and MPC looks too grey. Is there a Goldilocks setting I could use that is between the two?

Edit: Maybe I should clarify my setup, just in case that's relevant. OS is Windows 10. AMD graphics card to Pioneer receiver via HDMI. Video passed via HDMI to a Samsung Plasma.
