Help with my new x5650 overclock

CPUs and Overclocking - AnandTech Forums - forums.anandtech.com
Hello,

I've installed my 20$ x5650 yesterday to hopefully have a little upgrade that would have me good for 1 or 2 years.

I have read some threads about OCing the x5650. But still I have trouble to find my solution.

Maybe you can help me out...

Here's some info:

This is what I used to have:

P6T SE Bios 0908

i7 920 D0 @3.8Ghz on Air (My first OC)

Cooler Master 212 EVO

12 GB triple Channel (3x 4GB DDR3 Cruical 1800)

OC settings: (i7 920 D0)

Manual

21x locked

Intel Speedstep (TM) tech disabled

Intel Turbomode tech disabled

C state disabled

LLC enabled (no vdroop so no pikes and when Idle al lower vcore is used)

Spectrums disabled

BLCK 181

PCIe 100

DRAM Freq DDR3-1451 (x8)

UCLK Freq 1903 (x2 duhh always)

QPI 6532MT/s (x8 I think it was)

DRAM Timing untouched

vcore 1.21250

pll auto

QPI 1.25

Ram voltage 1.64

Everything else auto

Stable and max temps 81 on max load for 6 hours

Now I want to set my x5650 the right way. So Whats is needed? 4 or 4.2Ghz? Maybe 4.5Ghz is max on air if I'm lucky.

Remember I use aircooling and I don't want to invest more money in cooling or whatever.

With my i7 920 I also had patience with OCing. Lowest vcore and QPI to keep the temps low. Screwed BLCK up with steps of 50-100 and see if it was stable.

Best way to have max performance on lowest vcore imo.

I want...

- Have a nice still good enough PC no heavy rendering. I use it mostly as a mediastation these days. lol

- Play some games at 1080p around 60 FPS. I have a option on a cheap GTX 1060 6GB. I think this is max. for this processor?? Again what is needed 4Ghz or 4.2Ghz for gaming experience?

These are my thoughts on OCing my x5650 Westmere-ep model C rev. B1

Stock running vcore 0.960 - 1.128 on default BIOS settings. Under 100% load max vcore 1.184 (x22)

manual

22x locked

Intel Speedstep (TM) tech disabled

Intel Turbomode tech disabled

C state disabled

LLC enabled (no vdroop so no pikes and when Idle al lower vcore is used)

Spectrums disabled

BLCK 182 or 191 (4 or 4.2 Ghz)

PCIe 100

DRAM Freq: DDR3 x4 or x8 ???

UCLK x2

QPI x8 ???

DRAM Timing untouched (9-9-9-24-4-107-10-7-20-0)

vcore around 1.29-1.31 ???

PLL auto ???

QPI 1.24 (same as i7 920 or higher and if needed why please) ???

RAM voltage 1.64 or 1.66 ???

rest auto ???

I Hope you can help me out with some parameters to experience with.

I've read about some issues with the RAM option with the x5650 maybe you can point them out or maybe I'm good with my settings.

I don't see a reason to activate x23 on it. But if you can tell that it would be a difference for gaming... I will hear you.

Thank for reading, if you did ;-)

Kind regards,

Robert from Amsterdam
